Pleasure: Curator’s Talk
The works of art in Pleasure force us to examine the human form with a fresh perspective, as well as the complexity of what it means to ‘be human’. Outrageous, and challenging, Pleasure includes a wide range of artists across age, identities, ideas and mediums – all centred on the examining body as a site of celebration, joy and expression.
Join curators Julian Goddard, Helen Rayment and Evelyn Tsitas as they explore how Pleasure evolved and the themes and ideas that have shaped the exhibition.
Pleasure is humorous while maintaining serious intent. This strategy of presenting enjoyment as a means of critique is embedded in the selection of works for the exhibition.
About the curators:
Dr Julian Goddard was Head of the School of Design and Art at Curtin University, Perth until recently. He has been an academic, curator and artist for 30 years specializing in the aesthetics of the everyday.
Helen Rayment has been both Acting Director and the Gallery’s Senior Exhibition Coordinator since 2014. In 2016 she independently curated a critically well received project for the 2016 / 2017 Kochi Muziris Biennale in India, funded by Creative Victoria and the Australia India Institute. In 2018 Helen was awarded a professional development grant by the Australia Council to further her expertise in developing ‘culturepreneurship’ opportunities for Australian artists and arts workers in Asia. Previously Helen was Executive Director of Museums Australia (Victorian Branch), and has also held positions at the National Screen and Sound Archive in Canberra, and the Mornington Peninsula Regional Gallery.
Dr Evelyn Tsitas is a writer, communicator, researcher and curator with professional experience in Journalism, Communications, the Visual Arts and Higher Education. Evelyn translated her PhD research into the human-animal hybrid in science fiction into the successful 2018 RMIT Gallery exhibition ‘My Monster-The human-animal hybrid’ (29 June-18 August). The exhibition has been the most popular RMIT Gallery exhibition to date.
