Just Keep Going_It Is Like Something: performance
Come and watch gentle activism at work as artist Ryoko Kose – an invisible environmental refugee from the Fukushima nuclear disaster which occurred in Japan in 2011 – weaves her striking red yarn across RMIT Gallery’s ornate foyer to provide a tangible link to her past and present.
Ryoko will be performing as part of the exhibition Bruised: Art Action and Ecology in Asia. Audiences will be able to view the exhibition until 7 pm as part of the late night opening.
Just Keep Going_It Is Like Something is a part of Ryoko’s ongoing 3D line-drawing installation/performance series, consisting of different-patterned crochet hemp yarn directly applied to original structures in a range of sites across Australia.
The yarns are re-used, bringing all the experience and memories in the sites where they existed in the past. The performance represents ‘something’ by the five actions such as; knitting to reinforce, weaving to connect, cutting to destroy, sleeping to recover, and untangling to revise ‘something’.
The composition of the woven yarns represents how human lives exist in this world with other organisms, inorganic components and artefacts without structures nor hierarchy. As Ryoko explains “to realise this world building connectedness with constraints.”
Audiences, spatial, material and textural elements, and life that inhabits in sites are conceptualised in a process of constant ‘becoming’ in which identities are transformed by encounters with others as a part of the monstrous bright accumulation of time in the universe.
Bruised: Art Action and Ecology in Asia is part of ART+CLIMATE=CHANGE 2019 23 April–19 May, a socially-engaged festival of exhibitions, theatre works, keynote lectures, events and artist talks considering climate change impacts and the challenges and opportunities arising from climate change.
